Truck Tire Markings Explained: Size, Load Index and Speed Symbol

October 10, 2026

Truck tire markings contain useful information when you need a replacement quote. Copying the complete marking helps a supplier identify what you are asking for and avoids confusion between tires that look similar.

This guide explains the basic information to record. It is a starting point for an enquiry; final suitability must be checked against the vehicle specification and the tire manufacturer’s information.

Truck tire markings: reading 315/70 R22.5

  • 315: the nominal tire width in millimetres.
  • 70: the aspect ratio: nominal sidewall height as a percentage of tire width.
  • R: radial construction.
  • 22.5: the rim diameter in inches.

The last number describes the rim size, not the outside diameter of the tire. This is an example of how to read a marking, not a recommended size for your vehicle.

Record the load index and speed symbol too

A marking such as 154/150 L adds load and speed information. Load-index numbers refer to capacities in a manufacturer’s table; they are not weights in kilograms. The letter is a speed symbol. These details must be checked for the intended fitment, so send the whole marking rather than only the tire size.

For the technical explanation and reference charts, see Michelin’s truck tire size guide.

Tell the supplier where the tire will be fitted

Size is only part of the enquiry. Identify the steer, drive or trailer position and describe the vehicle’s work. Manufacturer guidance distinguishes axle applications, so a matching dimension alone does not establish that a tire is suitable. See Michelin’s guidance on choosing truck tires.

Take a useful sidewall photo

When the vehicle is safely parked and the tire is accessible, photograph the size and nearby ratings in good light. Take another photo of the brand and model if they do not fit in the same image. Keep the original resolution so small characters remain readable.

Do not guess an obscured number. Include what you can read and ask your workshop to confirm anything unclear. You can also send the approved specification from your vehicle records.

Turn the information into a quote request

Put the specification beside the quantity you need, then add your delivery location and preferred date. If you are replacing several sizes, use a separate line for each one. Our Berlin truck tire quote checklist provides a ready-to-use enquiry format.

Golden Truck Tires can discuss your purchasing requirements from Berlin. Send the details you have and identify any information that still needs confirmation.
